2 Chronicles 32:15
Now therefore let not Hezekiah deceive you, nor persuade you on this manner, neither yet believe him: for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of mine hand, and out of the hand of my fathers: how much less shall your God deliver you out of mine hand?
This was the tactic of Hezekiah’s enemy—to engage in a little bit of psychological warfare to try to convince the people that there was no hope, that they were sitting ducks doomed to be conquered by the powerful king of Assyria. Their track record may have been impressive, but they had never faced the God of Israel before. And all of their boasting would eventually be in vain when God Himself destroyed them.
The world tries to drag God down to their level, to make Him of no consequence, to deny His power and His authority. The world will shout loudly at us that it is worthless to trust God, that our faith has no effect, that they are bigger and stronger and we have no hope. The world around us is desperate to convince us that relying on God is in vain. But those are all lies, and it is to our enemy’s advantage when we believe them.
We don’t have to listen to what the world says, because we have God’s word on the matter, and His Word is truth. The truth is that we don’t have to be afraid because God is our refuge, our Savior, our help and our deliverer. The truth is our God is able, almighty and more powerful than all who come against us. The truth is that God loves us and He is on our side. So we don’t have to be afraid to continue to trust in Him, to bank everything on Him. It seems foolish to the world, but we know it is the wisest and the best thing that we can do.
Let’s not give up on God, even in the most dire circumstances we may face. Let’s not allow the lies of a godless world to cause us to doubt the God we serve. But may we continue to trust Him, to wait on Him, to have faith that He is everything His Word reveals that He is and who we know Him to be from our own experience of Him. It may not be the most popular thing to do. Others may not understand and may mock us for our faith. But that’s no reason to give up on a God who will never forsake us.
