John 2:5-8
His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.  And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece.  Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.  And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it.

We can approach our service to the Lord with the same attitude as these servants.  Jesus gave them very specific instructions, and they followed them without deviating.  They didn’t presume to know a better way to go about the task.  And even if it seemed strange or like it was not a good idea, they were willing to be obedient.  There was risk involved for them, so there had to be a degree of faith on their part, too, that when they drew out water from those purification barrels, they wouldn’t be punished for serving dirty water to the governor of the feast.

So we can serve Jesus specifically, carefully, fully, willingly, and by faith.  Jesus is also specific in His instructions to us.  He has given us His Word.  He has laid out what He wants us to know and what He wants us to do.  And then when we know what He wants us to do, we are careful to do as He says and to do all that He says.  But our heart attitude, our willingness to obey is an important aspect of our service to Him, because then we have to actually take those steps.  And we can be willing when we trust the giver of the commands, the method of doing the task, and the outcome that will result.

For these servants, doing everything that Jesus said led to a miracle that they got to have a part in.  When the water became wine, those servants knew more than anyone that it had simply been plain old water just moments before.  So the power and ability of Jesus was on display, and He could be magnified.  Certainly the servants could not take credit for what happened, even though they had been the ones to carry out the tasks.  But their obedience enabled His work to be accomplished.

It works the same for us.  When we are willing to obey, we get to have a part in the amazing work that Jesus is doing.  It may be something as simple as filling a pot with water, but then Jesus can do something much more through that.  Then Jesus can be glorified and honored, and we and others can come to appreciate much more who Jesus is and the power that He has to work in and through seemingly small and insignificant things.  And it all starts with simply doing what Jesus says to do.
