Psalm 73:26-28
My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.  For, lo, they that are far from thee shall perish: thou hast destroyed all them that go a whoring from thee.  But it is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord GOD, that I may declare all thy works.

Asaph learns by the end of this psalm that it is worth it to pursue a godly life.  It is not vain, as he had felt before, but it is a good thing, perhaps the best choice he will make.  Asaph realizes that he will have these moments of weakness.  He is a man in the flesh living in a sinful world, but God is with Him.  He can never lose that most precious and valuable treasure.  God will strengthen him and uplift him out of those sorrows, misunderstandings, and weak moments.

Drawing near to God is the best place we can find ourselves, and all of that other stuff, like success and wealth and worldly prosperity, loses its appeal.  We’ll find that our desire is instead for a God-centered life, to know Him better and be drawn closer to Him.  It is a passion and a fervency for only Him, and we find in Him, instead of the world, our fulfillment and satisfaction.  As we continue a pursuit of God, we won’t ever feel like we are missing out.

Asaph’s dilemma in this psalm was that the wicked seemed to be prospering while he, a man seeking God and seeking righteousness, was not.  But those who seem to prosper now but leave God out of their lives are not to be envied, because they face a fate no one would ever wish for.  The best thing to do is exactly what Asaph did—to draw near to God, to continuously seek Him and follow Him and trust Him with our whole lives.  We won’t regret that when our end comes.

The truth is that we can trust God.  We can trust Him with the whole of our lives.  And we can get as close as possible to Him.  And how amazing is that?  Because all that energy and time and effort we might spend pursuing those things of the world that will only leave us empty can be spent pursuing an infinite and eternal God with no beginning, no ending, a God of love and mercy and grace who will fill our lives to overflowing.  May we not be envious of the wicked world around us, but instead jealously guard our relationship with the Lord.
