2 Timothy 2:8-10
Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel: Wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto bonds; but the word of God is not bound.  Therefore I endure all things for the elect’s sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.

Paul may have been bound in prison.  He may at this point have been limited to one place, unable to travel like he used to do.  But the Word of God is not bound.  It is not stuck in one place or one time, but it is for everyone in every age.  The truth of Christ is relevant and necessary for all people.  It comes forth from God.  It spreads abroad by faithful people who share it with others.  It has traveled to us today in the form of our Bibles.  It still has a place in our world.  It still works in hearts and lives.  And it’s still up to us to proclaim its most important message.

The main truth of the Gospel that Paul was preaching is that Jesus is alive.  He was preaching Christ crucified and risen from the dead.  And if He is alive, then He is yet at work in the world.  His power is still at work.  He is still able to change lives and transform hearts and give us hope.  Paul wasn’t worried about himself, but he wanted the truth to be made known.  He wanted people to accept Christ and to experience His love and forgiveness firsthand and to know Jesus in that personal way because Jesus had made such a difference to him.  And he was willing to defend that truth no matter what it cost him.

Though Paul was in prison, that was not going to stop the Word of God from going forth.  Though people have tried for hundreds of years to silence it, His Word still persists.  It might not be a popular truth to speak into our world today, just as it was not popular in Paul’s day, but that’s no reason not to continue on telling people about Jesus.  That’s no reason to hinder what God can do through His Word in our world today.

May we simply be faithful to the Gospel.  Let us seek to know it well for ourselves and to share it with others.  May we be willing to endure whatever the consequences for standing up for the truth.  And may we never compromise the life-changing message that Jesus is alive, that He died for us, and that He is still able to save.  Ours is a God who cannot be silenced.  His Word cannot be held captive by an evil world.  And His truth will continue to go forth into a world that desperately needs it.
