Hebrews 2:17-18
Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.  For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted.

How amazing is it to think that God came to earth in the form of a man?  He descended into the fragile vessel of a human body with all of its limitations and weaknesses.  He came as a baby, and there’s nothing more helpless than a newborn child.  He had to grow and experience the growing pains of life as a human in a sin-cursed world.  He had to nourish a body that got hungry and thirsty and rest a body that got tired.  He faced temptation.  He faced pain and suffering.  He faced death.

Jesus wasn’t just partway like us.  He was like us in every way, except that He was without sin.  He became like His brethren so He could make reconciliation as the High Priest—not as simply a distant God, but one who experienced life in the world and knew what it was like to be one of us.  And isn’t that the heart of “I know how you feel”?  And isn’t that so often what we want—just some who can understand?  And amazing as it may seem, Jesus really can understand all that we are going through.

So when we feel damaged and broken by the effects of sin or beaten down by life in this world, we can turn to Jesus in the midst of that.  His love and compassion are real, tempered by his own suffering.  He offers us comfort and peace as a fellow traveler through the struggles of life.  He forgives our sins as that High Priest who knew humanity on such a personal level.  And He guides our path as the only one who knows the right way to go.

Jesus will walk close beside us throughout our lives.  He is our faithful Savior, and He is with us for the duration.  No matter how misunderstood we may feel at times, may we live knowing Jesus understands, and He cares, and He will be with us in whatever we are going through.  He has seen the devastating effects of sin, and He longs to bring redemption to our lives.  He faced everything that we have to face, and He can be our example of how best to live a human life in a fallen world.
