Hebrews 4:12-13
For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.  Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

We may think we are hiding at times, but truly we stand totally exposed before God.  There is nothing to hide behind.  There is no part of us that He cannot see.  He knows everything down to the thoughts and intents of our hearts.  And what we think we have buried cries out like Abel’s blood and gives us away completely, and we are left standing behind a tree with some leaves trying to hide our shame.  There has been a tendency in us to hide ever since that first time sin pierced a human heart.

But nothing can cover our nakedness in the sight of God.  Nothing is closed to Him or off-limits.  But what does it mean to use that He knows all, even those things we try to hide from others and what we try to hide from ourselves?  What can it mean to us when we understand that He loves us even then, that He will give us grace and mercy even in that imperfect state where He sees all of our flaws and scars and imperfections very clearly?  When He knows exactly what we’ve done and comes seeking us anyway?

The Word of God reveals those secret things to us, because we don’t always realize them for ourselves.  It knows the evil that lurks in the hearts of men, produced from that sin nature implanted long ago, that has plagued us and our world ever since.  But the point of exposing us this way is not to magnify our shame, but to show us our need for that covering that can only come from God Himself, the solution that He has provided for our otherwise unsolvable problem.

Our instinct may be to hide and pull back, but that doesn’t really change what God already knows about us.  We may fear to ever approach knowing what kind of people we really are.  But God gives us Jesus, imparts His righteousness to us, and invites us to come close.  He invites us to walk along with Him restored and whole and in His light instead of looking for dark places to hide.  He invites us into that freedom that comes from being forgiven, being completely known and loved and right with our Creator, and looking forward to that home prepared for us.
