Exodus 3:7-8
And the LORD said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows; And I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land and a large, unto a land flowing with milk and honey; unto the place of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites.

God is always aware of what is happening, even when it seems like He is absent from the situation.  He sees and knows of our condition.  He hears our cries.  He understands exactly our circumstances and knows what we are going through, what we are feeling, and what the cause is.  And He also has a plan for what He is going to do about it.  Though the people of Israel may have felt forgotten, God knew the severity of their affliction, the sorrow they felt, the burden that was upon them.  And He knew they were helpless to do anything about it themselves.

And just like with the nation of Israel, God looks down upon our world today and sees the struggle of mankind.  He sees us trapped in the bondage of sin, bound by chains, hurting and suffering, and the sorrow of it all.  He understands what sin can do to a heart and a soul.  He understands the effects that sin has on our lives, our relationships, and our cursed world.  And long before we ever recognized our own need for deliverance, God had a plan to set us free from that unrelenting master.

God tells Moses that He is coming down to deliver His people before He ever calls Moses to do anything.  And though Moses will be the instrument to secure freedom for His people, God is the one who is doing the delivering.  He takes it upon Himself and comes down to do for His people what they couldn’t do for themselves.  And He did the same thing when He secured our redemption.  God Himself came down to be the deliverer.  God Himself secured our freedom.  God Himself did what was necessary so we could be saved.

When God set His people free from Egypt, it wasn’t just to bring them out of bondage, but to bring them into something else much better.  They weren’t to conquer Egypt and continue to dwell there, but to go out of that place into the promised land.  And in the same way, God doesn’t free us from sin just to leave us where He found us, but to go forward into something else.  Of course, we have the future hope of eternity with our Lord and Savior, but even now, we go forth into a fruitful life walking with Jesus.  We leave behind the world and strive for something else beyond that.  So may we trust God alone to deliver us.  And may we remember that ours is a God who can deliver us from anything that holds us captive.
