Psalm 142:4-5
I looked on my right hand, and beheld, but there was no man that would know me: refuge failed me; no man cared for my soul.  I cried unto thee, O LORD: I said, Thou art my refuge and my portion in the land of the living.

Scripture is full of real people who exhibit a genuine human experience, perhaps none more so than David, whose heart is laid bare in the psalms that he wrote.  And even David, a mighty man so dedicated to the Lord, was not immune to these kinds of extreme feelings.  And the reality of life is that we are not, either.  David was feeling absolutely alone.  He had no one to turn to, no one to help him, no one who cares where he is and what he’s going through.

And if David had to rely on other men, he would have been left destitute.  But he had a God to call upon.  He had Almighty God to turn to, and so he had a refuge.  He had a friend and an ally, someone who cared, someone who would reach out to him and intervene for him.  And the truth is, we do, too.  Though everyone else forsook us and we fell to the lowest place we’ve ever been, we can still cry out to God.  When no other human being on this earth would dare to look our way or come close, God will turn toward us and draw near.

We need a safe place to go, and God is our refuge.  He is the shelter from the storms of life, a defense against our enemies, a help in our greatest weaknesses and struggles.  He is someone we can rely on, and He will never let us down.  He will never abandon or forsake us.  We can trust Him and trust in Him.  We can depend on Him completely.

Sometimes there will be moments in life where we feel absolutely alone, completely abandoned, like we just have no one to care at all.  But God will be there for us no matter how alone we really are.  He rises up as that strong tower, that walled city, that safe place of protection and comfort and solace.  So let us go to Him.  Let us avail ourselves of these things He provides to us.  Let us take our shelter under the wings of our loving and merciful God.
