Never Forsaken

Psalm 27:9-10
Hide not thy face far from me; put not thy servant away in anger: thou hast been my help; leave me not, neither forsake me, O God of my salvation.  When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up.

Isn’t this sometimes what we fear?  That God will leave us, too?  That somehow we will lose Him or lose His love like we have lost the love and favor of someone else?  When people we have trusted have let us down or someone we depended on abandoned us or someone important to us has forsaken us, we may be tempted to think that God might treat us the same way.  When we’re let down in a significant way and disappointed by other people, we might fear that God will let us down, too.

Even the strongest human bonds can be broken.  Even that seemingly unbreakable parent/child connection can be broken.  Marriages end all the time.  Friendships break up.  Families fall apart.  But we don’t need to beg God to stay, because He’s not going to leave us.  We can always count on Him, and there is no end to His faithfulness.  And even if every person in the whole world abandoned us, He would stay.  He is a perfect Father who never forsakes His children.

But though God is perfect, we are not.  And so sometimes doubts and fears arise.  Sometimes we feel abandoned and forsaken even though we haven’t been.  Sometimes the darkness of our circumstances draws our hearts away from that certain truth and we can believe for a moment that God has left us all alone to face something that is too hard for us.  Sometimes our own feelings or Satan’s lies or even the cruelty of other people can convince us that God has forsaken us.

But God’s Word assures us over and over again that He is with us.  Time and time again He proves His love and faithfulness.  And so we have to choose to believe Him, and we can believe Him, even if the rest of our world caves in around us.  So let us rest in that assurance and comfort that our gracious God gives to us.  Let us know with a God-honoring certainty that our faithful Father is always with us and is always there for us.  Let us allow His truth and love to cast away those fears.
