Psalm 77:7-9
Will the Lord cast off for ever? and will he be favourable no more?  Is his mercy clean gone for ever? doth his promise fail for evermore?  Hath God forgotten to be gracious? hath he in anger shut up his tender mercies?  Selah.

We can’t allow our feelings and our negative emotions to overcome the unfailing truth that we know in our heads and our hearts.  We can’t allow what we are experiencing to negate the promises of God.  Let’s not be fooled by these illusions that our minds can create.  What we know about God—what He’s shown us and revealed to us—will combat our doubts.

We know that God will not cast us off.  He has promised to never leave us nor forsake us.  We are safe in the hollow of His hand.  He has sent to us His Comforter, and His Spirit dwells within us.  God is ever in the midst of His people, and we are His precious blood-bought children, so we don’t need to fear ever being cast away.  And let’s not doubt His goodness.  He promises to give good things to those who love Him.  He invites us to partake of the bounties of His everlasting storehouse.  He has showered us with blessings even when we were at our worst state.  His mercy endures forever.  He works things together for our good.  His promises never fail and His Word will never pass away.  His grace is everlasting, and it abounds much more than our sin.

But maybe we do need to consider why we feel that God’s favor is no longer upon us.  So let us examine our hearts to find if He does have cause to be angry with us.  We know God is full of grace and tender mercies, but we also know that He cannot tolerate sin.  So let us see if perhaps there is some sin hindering our relationship with Him.  Let us see if broken fellowship with our Lord is the source of our heaviness and the reason we are mourning so.  Let us see if perhaps He is using these feelings to draw us back into a right relationship with Him.

So often these kinds of doubts are temporary.  Sometimes they may be things God uses to pull us closer to Him, to get us to see some things we may have been overlooking.  But let’s not trust in what we feel, but stand firm in faith on His promises and truths.  Let’s not trust our hazy vision, our limited perspective or our wrong understanding, but look to what we know for sure.  God is good.  He is gracious.  He loves us eternally.  So even if it seems hard to believe, let’s not doubt our holy God of truth.
