Psalm 57:9-11
I will praise thee, O Lord, among the people: I will sing unto thee among the nations. For thy mercy is great unto the heavens, and thy truth unto the clouds. Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens: let thy glory be above all the earth.
Sometimes the sky looks so close that we feel we can touch it. But the truth is, we’re so small compared to the bigness of our planet, its atmosphere, our galaxy, and all the universes beyond. The truth is that God is big. He cannot be contained in some small idol on Earth, for He encompasses everything that exists even beyond this one planet.
Our praise for such a big God should be big. David’s praise for His God was not contained in a small space, but it was among all the people and all the nations. It stretched out as far and as wide as he could get it to go. Indeed, his praises have traveled the long road of time to reach even us today, and they echo through all the ages, for they originated from a pure heart. Our praise to our God should be as big as we can get. Our praises should stretch far and wide and high and deep, for our God is worthy of that kind of praise. Our praise and our songs should magnify a God who is above all and beyond anything we can see.
We try to imagine these great distances, what it would take to reach the clouds. But that’s exactly how far God’s mercy goes. His mercy is an immeasurable distance. From the concrete starting point of our small lives, it reaches far out of sight of the most powerful telescopes. Though we’d try to stretch higher and higher, we’d never get to the top. We’d never find the ending point. His truth goes all the way to the clouds, and man could never reach such a height. The amount of truth we can grasp is but a small part of the infinite truth that stretches higher than we can ever hope to attain to.
If we could imagine everything that exists stacked in layer upon layer upon layer, only on top of all that is where God would be. Above the heavens, above all the Earth, above everything is God’s place. That’s His rightful place, and we should give Him that honor. We raise Him up, like ascending a ladder step by step by step, until He has the highest place in our lives, until nothing and no one comes before Him, for that is the only worthy place for a God so full of goodness as He is.
And His glory is above the Earth, for nothing can contain it. It is beyond words to explain, beyond our comprehension, so much more than even the Earth can hold, for it is the glory of a holy and righteous God. It is the glory of our God of love. It is wonderful. It is beautiful. And it spurs us forward in our lives of faith just to know that He is there at all. And how much he deserves that glory and how little we can offer in comparison. But let’s strive with all our hearts to live in such a way that brings glory to our God, and let’s be sure to give Him all the praise.
