Psalm 119:57
Thou art my portion, O LORD: I have said that I would keep thy words.
And if we’ve said we would keep His words, then let us do so. If we’ve promised to obey God and to follow Him all the days of our lives, then let us not break that promise or take that commitment lightly. If we’ve given voice to our intentions to do what God has said, then let us put feet to them, as well, and carry them out day by day in our lives. If we have purposed in our hearts to do something for the Lord, then let us then follow through and see it through to completion. And if in love we’ve pledged to Him that He would be our God, He would be Lord of our lives, He would be the one we sought and the one we truly desired, then let us refuse to forsake Him no matter what.
Will we commit here and now to stand firm in the hard times, to stand firm in the low times? Will we refuse to compromise or give in even if no one else will stand faithful beside us? Will we dedicate our lives to keeping God’s Word and embed it in every part of our lives? It is simply a matter of purposing in our hearts that we will, of deciding ahead of time that that is what we are going to do and then building brick by brick in faith and faithfulness through our lifetime.
If we say with the psalmist that the Lord is our portion, then He should be what we choose over everything else. He should be what we will seek above all, and we should be satisfied just to go with Him for the duration of our journey through this life. When He is the one we are looking up at expectantly with all the trust in the world, our heavenly Father, the one who desires to give us all that He deems best for us, then what a small thing it will seem to simply keep His Word and do as He commands. It will be our greatest joy to give all we can for the one who gives so graciously to us.
Let’s not be afraid of a little effort, a little faithfulness, a little obedience. Let’s not be afraid to make a commitment for fear that we’ll then have to stick to it, because we never have to do it in our own power. And when we think about our Lord and all that He is and all that He does and what He has given, let’s allow that to strengthen our determination to keep His Word. Let us dig our heels in and keep our feet firmly planted on that Solid Rock, trusting, obeying, and resting in Him.
