Wholly God’s

1 Thessalonians 5:23
And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

God always deals in wholeness and completeness. He doesn’t do things halfway or halfheartedly. His blessings are not incomplete. He doesn’t save partway, but to the uttermost. He doesn’t give to a certain extent, but fully. When Jesus came to this Earth, He was wholly God and wholly man. And when He died for our sins, He died for everyone’s. When He gave us His Spirit, He gave us all of it. And so when He sanctifies us, He sanctifies us wholly. There is not a part of us or a part of our lives that is untouched by His sanctifying hand, and though we cannot be perfect while on this Earth, we one day will be.

And because God loves us with all of His love, He desires to complete us and make us whole, and that only comes by being joined together with Him. But He wants in return our whole heart, our whole life, our whole focus—every part of us. And when we give Him all of us, He can make us wholly His. We weren’t meant to be divided, so only when we surrender spirit, soul, and body, our own sort of trinity, can we be united in perfect wholeness with Christ. Jesus is one with the Father and the Spirit, and He wants us to be one with Him, too—unified, whole, complete.

So, will we let Him do His sanctifying work? Will we let Him mold and make us? Will we give Him all of us—all of our lacks, all of our wants, all of our failures? Will we give Him access to every chamber of our heart, or do we keep some doors locked? Do we obey all of His commands or pick and choose? Are we fully committed to Him, or are we dishonoring Him by only going halfway, only giving partway, only serving halfheartedly when He’s given His all for us?

We are being prepared to one day stand in the presence of our Lord. Isaiah’s heart was cut to the core by just one glimpse. John fainted at the sight of Him. Paul fell down blind from the glory of His light. So while we’re here, He’s making us fit to stand before Him. Yes, as true believers our sins are forgiven. Yes, we stand in His righteousness. Yes, we will be perfect in heaven. But there is a process to make us whole and to make us holy, to make us that complete version of ourselves that will bow at His feet.
