The Living Word

Hebrews 4:12
For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

The Word of God is presented here almost as a living creature, and indeed Jesus Christ is the living Word, the Word made flesh. He is the very personification of everything that God’s Word is and does in our world and in our own hearts. It is actively working, moving, seeking, challenging, as tireless as Jesus was as He walked this Earth and took His message of love to the multitudes and ministered to every need along the way. God’s Word, that one simple book, is the very breath of God echoing through the ages His sweet whispers to our hearts.

It is alive, just as Christ is, residing on His throne in heaven, ruling and reigning. And if it is alive, it is therefore actively working, for there is much for it to do. And if it is alive and working, then it is relevant to our lives today, and it is something that we should hold fast and count on and learn and study and know for ourselves, because knowing it is knowing God and knowing His Son. And when we know Him better, we can love Him better and serve Him better and honor Him properly with our lives.

It is powerful, just as Jesus held all the power of heaven within Him, and it can break down walls and shine light into dark places and rebuild broken things and soothe and comfort and sustain. It is a sure foundation, a solid rock, an unwavering fortress of protection, guidance, and safety. And it fights every battle, for it is sharper than a sword, able to pierce through the lies and the noise and the deception of sin and Satan and reveal the truth. It is thin yet solid and able to penetrate down to the deepest depths of our souls.

And there it is a discerner of the minds and hearts of men, for Jesus is our creator and knows His creation well. He knows what dwells in the hearts of men and knows who is for Him and who is against Him. And indeed His Word can show to us just the kind of person we really are, the evil we are capable of, and the goodness that we can have when Christ dwells within, for it reveals not only our hearts, but the heart of God Himself. And when we know the nature of the one who dwells so near, we can’t help but be changed by that, because at its core, it gives us life.

Look at all that the Word of God is. Look at all that it can do. It is not just a story about God and the people He interacted with, but it is something that writes our story, too, because if we follow His Word, if we obey Him, if we give our lives to Him, we end up going to be with Him where He is. So let’s treasure His Word and allow it to live and work in us.
