Turn Aside and See

Exodus 3:3-4
And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt. And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I.

Moses’ encounter with God at the burning bush was an important turning point in his life. It was the starting point for his role in leading the children of Israel out of Egypt and into the land God had prepared for them. But what if Moses had just walked on by? Certainly it was a curious sight, and we are curious people. But sometimes we get distracted. Sometimes our minds are far away from where we are and we don’t pay attention to what is happening around us. Sometimes we don’t see a sign right in front of us because we are looking for it somewhere else. Sometimes the unexpected workings of God scare us off and we would flee rather than turn aside to see.

But Moses, leading his flock around the desert, saw this unconsumed burning bush and turned aside to see. God used it to get Moses’ attention, just like He uses different things in our lives to get our attention. In the most mundane of our daily chores, God can cry out to us if we are open to His calling. In the loneliest places, God can light a spark that will break open a path to some great work He has for us to do. God transformed Moses from a shepherd of sheep to a shepherd of His people, and He can transform our lives as we obey Him and trust His leading.

God is watching us to see what we will do. Sometimes situations come into our lives for a reason, used by God to lead us in a new direction. He sees the intent of our hearts and knows if we are open to being used by Him in whatever He would ask. He knows how we will respond and the extremes He may need to go to in order to get our attention.

Let’s be alert as we go through our lives. Let’s walk with our eyes open, expecting to see God moving and working around us, expecting to hear His voice call out to us, ready to obey, willing to go somewhere else and try something new. Let’s allow God to move us forward by His strength to accomplish much for His glory. Let us not pass by the burning bush God has placed in our path and forfeit the glorious journey of faith He desires to take us on.
