Hearing From Jesus

Luke 21:37-38
And in the day time he was teaching in the temple; and at night he went out, and abode in the mount that is called the mount of Olives. And all the people came early in the morning to him in the temple, for to hear him.

What is our commitment to hearing from the Lord? He comes daily to the temple to teach and spread His Word, so will we come early to hear Him? Will we set aside that time? Will we seek it out purposely? Will we make it a priority to go every day to His Word, led by His Spirit, immersed in His truth? Will we choose to draw near to Him as He draws near to us? Will we seek His face?

For Jesus as this moment, His time was short. He had made His way to Jerusalem despite the religious leaders seeking to kill Him. It was almost time for the Passover feast and His own sacrificial death. And so Jesus attended to the urgent matter of teaching in the temple, of seeking to share His truth with as many as possible. He desired to show people the Father, to help them understand that He was their Savior before He would ascend from this world. He wanted people to know what God says over and above what anyone else might say.

Today we have God’s completed Word. We don’t have to push our way through a crowd to get close enough or strain our ears to hear. We can open our Bibles and hear what the Lord has to say. His Spirit will guide us into truth. We can devote ourselves to studying His Word to know His mind, His character, His heart, and His ways. We can come with expectation that we can hear from Him every day if we merely go and sit as His feet with open ears, an open heart, and an open mind.
