John 19:28-30
After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth. When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
Can you imagine God there writing out the story, planning every detail so carefully, arranging and devising every necessary component in just the right way at just the right time? The master storyteller, the almighty creator making possible such a thing as this. The heart of love that it flowed from. The willingness to set a plan in motion centuries in the making and to have it culminate here with Jesus on the cross giving His life.
Jesus knew the story from beginning to end before He ever came to Earth. Jesus knew the whole plan before the foundation of the world. He tried to tell His disciples, but they didn’t quite understand. Scripture told the story long before it would come to pass. Some who knew the Scripture would see these events unfold and still not believe. But Jesus knew every detail. He knew His final purpose was to give us life. He knew all the Scripture that He would fulfill. He knew the end result and all that it would mean for this world.
It is so hard to fathom Jesus’ perfect knowledge, His infinite wisdom, His thoughts high above our own as He knows all from the beginning and then sees it through to the end. It was just as He rehearsed it, each moment following the script, each event coming to pass so perfectly when it was time. And now it was finished, that plan of redemption, the solution for sin, all so perfect and nothing left undone. And what does it all mean, that God came to die in this way? It means life and hope and forgiveness for us, for the whole world. It means we are free from sin. It means our own death will only be the beginning of an eternity with our Lord forever if we believe on Him.
