Just One

Romans 5:17-21
For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.) Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.

By one man, death entered into the world and shattered the perfection of Eden. Because Adam sinned, all who are born after him are born in sin, born spiritually dead, born into bodies that will eventually die physically. What a consequence that would come from the actions of one man. It seems unfathomable that all the sin of our present world sprang from that initial act of disobedience.

So equally, as Paul explains, by one man life can also enter into the world, that sin that seemingly dominates can be forgiven, and all that was lost and broken can be restored. Jesus was born into this world but had no sin nature, for He is the Son of God. He lived a life in this world without committing any sin. He fulfilled all the law. And then He gave His life as a substitute for sinners everywhere and of any generation. By grace He gives this gift freely. And so those who accept it can be righteous, can have eternal life, can be fully justified, can dwell near to God.

It only takes one. One act of disobedience to introduce sin into the world. One sin in our own lives to make us guilty. One transgression to separate us from life. But then it only takes one Savior to undo all of the multitude of sins. One act of sacrifice to change the course of our eternity. One moment of faith to believe on Jesus, accept His gift, and be free, forgiven, and whole in Christ. One life to live in service to Him for His honor and glory. One hope of that future day where we can dwell with Him forever.
