Under the Blood

Matthew 27:24-25
When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it. Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.

And indeed Jesus’ blood would be upon them. His blood fell as sweat when He prayed in the garden. His blood fell as the soldiers mocked Him and forced a crown of thorns onto His head. His blood fell as they scourged Him, marring and disfiguring His body before He was led to the hill of Calvary. His blood marked the path He trod, bearing the weight of His cross upon His weary, bloodied body. His blood poured out as they hammered the nails and then later pierced His side. His innocent blood puddled and pooled and then soaked into the earth at the foot of the cross as He gave His life. And His blood stained the linen garments His body was wrapped in as He was laid in a tomb.

There was a cost for shedding innocent blood in Israel, and woe was upon them. Here the people take responsibility for it, and it would be required at their hands. These unbelievers thought to rid themselves of Jesus, believing Him to be an unjust man worthy of death for blasphemy and unrighteousness. But Jesus was the Lamb of God, the unblemished sacrifice, perfect and spotless and able to bring atonement as the final offering for the sins of mankind. His blood spoke from the ground like Abel’s, “You have killed your brother and rejected your Messiah and your God.”

But to those who believe, Jesus’ blood is upon us in a different way, for it flows from Him to cleanse us of our sins, to wash us clean from the dirt and filth of that sin nature we are all born with, to make us right in the sight of God. With His blood sprinkled upon us, we are set apart as holy unto the Lord, marked as His very own, redeemed by His sacrifice, identified with His death so that He can give us new life. Under His blood, we are safe from wrath, set free from bondage, and whole in Christ.
