In Time of Need

Hebrews 4:14-16
Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

In time of need I may go to Him. And when am I not so desperately needy for all that God can offer to me? When do I not need what only He can give? And He Himself invites me into His very presence. His Spirit within me compels a connection to the Father and to the Son. His mercy and grace flow from His throne as a pathway that I can take to meet Him there in that sacred place.

Sometimes this is so hard for me to grasp—that somehow this mighty and glorious and perfect holy God would want anything to do with an insignificant sinner such as myself. But the great High Priest is Jesus Christ, who is my Lord and Savior. And He lived on this Earth just as I have. He walked the dusty paths of Israel and visited the crowded towns and cities. He interacted with this world as any other human being, except He did so without sinning. He faced the temptations that I face. He faced the struggles of humanity. He walked in my shoes, and so He does understand, very intimately and personally, my experience of life. And as God, He knows everything about me. He knows my need before I ask for anything at all. He knows that I am needy, that I was made to need Him.

With this understanding, I can come boldly instead of timidly or fearfully. With this knowledge, I can come before the God who loves me and calls me His own dear child. I can stand in His presence because of Christ my Redeemer and I can pour out my heart to Him. Let me trust Him, then, to take my unworthy petitions and do as He will as I go humbly, yet with confidence, to the throne of the living God seeking help in my time of need.
