Genesis 3:1-7
Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.
Often the most powerful tool of Satan is merely implanting an idea in our minds for us to consider. He presented this scenario to Eve. He got her to think about that fruit in just a slightly different way than she had before. He got her to look at God in a slightly different way. He put a different spin on what God had actually said, and that was enough for Eve to eat the fruit and sin against God.
Satan implants doubts. He gets us to consider that God is not good or fair or just or loving or gracious or true—or any of the things that we know Him to be. Satan causes us to doubt God’s Word, that it is true and worthy of our obedience, that it is right and that we can and should trust what it says. He wants us to wonder if God really means what He says.
May we always remember that Satan is the father of lies and there is no truth in him. What he says may sound good or seem right, but his aim is to deceive. His goal is to destroy. His desire is to oppose God at every turn. And we end up sort of as pawns in his game that he uses to try to get back at God. Let us be on guard and be anchored in the truth. Let us stay near to God. And may we consult Him first before we take some hasty action on our own that could lead us down a regrettable path.
