You Matter

John 4:5-7
Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour. There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.

Jesus came to Samaria knowing all things ahead of time. He knew He would meet this woman there at the well when no one else would be there. He knew all about her—her past, her struggles, her questions, her current situation. And knowing all of this, He wanted to talk to her, to help her understand some things, to invite her to receive His gift of eternal life. And she did believe, and then she told others about Jesus, and then they had a two-day church service where many came to know Jesus by His Word He shared with them.

Whether we’ll admit it or not, sometimes we write people off. Perhaps this woman had a reputation in her town. Perhaps she had faced the ridicule of her neighbors. Perhaps she had been cast off. Perhaps she felt isolated and lonely. But she mattered to Jesus. He set up this divine encounter because He loved her, because He cares about lost sheep, because He came to seek and to save. And it was this woman, out of all those who lived in this town, who Jesus spoke to first and who He used to bring many others to Him.

Who have you written off or cast aside as hopeless? There is no such thing where Jesus is concerned. Or maybe you are the one who others have given up on, someone rejected and ridiculed, someone who doesn’t quite belong. But Jesus sees you there right where you are, and He knows your story, every detail, but He loves you so much that He wants to be your Savior. He wants to forgive your sins and give you new life and adopt you into His family. And then He wants to use you to help others come to know Him for themselves.
