Colossians 2:6-10
As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving. Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:
“It’s not a religion, it’s a relationship.” Christians say this often about knowing Jesus as Savior, and it’s true. We walk in Christ. We are rooted in Christ. We stand on Christ. Our faith is established in Him, and so our lives should be built on Him. The center of Christianity is not a myth or a story. It is not a spiritual practice or duty. It is not an idea or a work. It is Jesus Christ Himself.
Religion is these philosophies, ideas, traditions, and practices. Religion is something that comes from people and is often used to gain power or control. Religion can leave us confused, unwhole, and yet separated from God. Ideas and rituals may sound good and make us feel better somehow, but they don’t do anything about our sin. But Jesus is a person, someone who we can know personally, someone who unites us to God, who secures our eternity, who gives us life. All we need is in Him alone.
So then once we know Christ and have a relationship with Him, may it be a growing and deepening relationship. Let us cling to Christ, the solid rock, and learn of Him and His ways. Let us trust in His completed work and His power working in us. We rest in Him in our weary moments and grow in Him day by day. We can share our lives with Him, serve Him faithfully, and have fellowship and communion. Jesus has a lofty position, the name above all names. He is King, Lord, Master, and Creator, and yet He is a personal Savior. How amazing it is that we can know God so intimately. But are we availing ourselves of that opportunity to know Him, love Him, and live for Him each day?
Amen!
