Exodus 6:5-9
And I have also heard the groaning of the children of Israel, whom the Egyptians keep in bondage; and I have remembered my covenant. Wherefore say unto the children of Israel, I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you out of their bondage, and I will redeem you with a stretched out arm, and with great judgments: And I will take you to me for a people, and I will be to you a God: and ye shall know that I am the LORD your God, which bringeth you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. And I will bring you in unto the land, concerning the which I did swear to give it to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; and I will give it you for an heritage: I am the LORD. And Moses spake so unto the children of Israel: but they hearkened not unto Moses for anguish of spirit, and for cruel bondage.
The words of God are sure: “I will. I will. I will.” But the heart of the people is doubt. They’re not so sure He will. Any faith they might have is covered over by the sorrow of their circumstances. But it will be as God willed it to be, because He is able no matter if we believe Him or not. And He follows through whether we think He will or not. And He fulfills His purposes, promises, and plans because of who He is, a faithful, all-powerful God.
Not only did God promise to take them out of bondage, but He was delivering them to something—to be His people, to dwell in the promised land, to be the nation that would fulfill a very specific purpose for this world in producing the Messiah, the Savior of all mankind. And that would involve a process of teaching and learning, journeying and growing, seeing God work and then having the courage to continue forward, one step of faith after another.
Surely it works the same for us. All of God’s promises are sure. We can trust in His Word. He is truly able. But we are prone to doubt. We often allow our circumstances to cloud our vision of the Almighty. We tend toward unbelief, especially when the situation seems dire or overwhelming. But God doesn’t change. And He calls us out of our bondage to sin and into a new life of hope in Christ, into service, into love, into living for Him in whatever He has for us to do in this world. And we grow in faith as we journey with Him, as we learn His Word, as we see His works, as we get to know His character, and as we experience for ourselves His unfailing nature.
Amen!
