A Testimony

Luke 8:38-39
Now the man out of whom the devils were departed besought him that he might be with him: but Jesus sent him away, saying, Return to thine own house, and shew how great things God hath done unto thee. And he went his way, and published throughout the whole city how great things Jesus had done unto him.

He told what great things Jesus had done, and that story involved a lot of painful memories for this man. I can’t pretend to understand what it must have been like to be possessed by so many devils, enough to drive an entire herd of pigs to drown in the sea. I can’t imagine the evil oppression upon him, how he was treated by others because of that, the mental and emotional anguish that must have resulted from that experience.

But for all the suffering that he experienced, Jesus had a cure. And that was the heart of his testimony: “I was in this hopeless, helpless place, but Jesus came to me where I was. I could not go seek Him, but He came to help me. No one else could do what He did. He sent every single demon away. And now I am free. Now I can have life. Now I am not bound by shackles. Now I am in my right mind. Now the agony is gone. Now I know the Lord.”

We all have a story to tell. All who know Jesus as Savior have been saved from something. Any life that He has touched can tell others of the great things He has done. All of our stories are different and our experiences unique, but the commonality in them all is the great grace and mercy of Jesus, His power, His love, His truth. And those things set us free and set us on a new course. This man told what Jesus had done unto him. It didn’t matter what Jesus had done in other lives. His experience was worthy to share. He was an expert on that, without having to know everything about Jesus and what He could do. A testimony is a personal thing, and we never know how our particular story can resonate in someone else’s heart.
