Not Condemned

John 8:10-11
When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee? She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.

Imagine being caught in the act in the midst of your own sin, publicly accused, brought before the King of kings, the righteous judge, with the prospect of being put to death right then and there. What fear would come over you? What shame would fill you? What excuse would you have? Would there be any hope in your heart? So imagine, then, your accusers dropping their stones and walking away. Imagine standing face-to-face with Jesus as He offers His mercy and pardons your sin. Imagine being set free from a sure death and being given new life, a second chance, the hope to do something different and make new choices going forward.

That was the experience of this woman, and that is the experience of all of us who have been to Jesus and received His grace and mercy for the worst of our sins. The world around will condemn us. Satan will accuse us. Often, we beat ourselves up for the wrong that we have done. But when Jesus forgives us, we can walk away in the freedom of new life. We can make different choices. We can forsake sin and pursue righteousness. Jesus could rightfully condemn us as sinners, but He chooses to offer forgiveness. He makes a way for us to be set free from those chains that bind and to have life instead of death. So how will we choose to go out and live our lives after experiencing such great grace?
