Genesis 39:21-23
But the LORD was with Joseph, and shewed him mercy, and gave him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison. And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners that were in the prison; and whatsoever they did there, he was the doer of it. The keeper of the prison looked not to any thing that was under his hand; because the LORD was with him, and that which he did, the LORD made it to prosper.
Was there anyone more unjustly treated than Joseph? He had had those dreams of people bowing down to him. He was the favorite son of Jacob. Seemingly he had everything going for him. And then he ended up sold into slavery, carried into Egypt, living as a servant. Then he was wrongly accused by his master’s wife and ended up in prison, though he’d done nothing wrong. It wasn’t fair. It wasn’t a good situation. It wasn’t what Joseph wanted for his life. But there he was, and God was with him. God would show him mercy and favor even there. God would bless him and prosper him even there.
Many times life is unfair. Many times people treat us unjustly. Many times we end up in situations and circumstances we don’t want to be in. But God will never leave us nor forsake us. Even prison walls are not a barrier to His presence drawing near to us. The unjustness of a situation cannot prevent His mercy and blessings from reaching us even there in that most undesirable place.
It is not easy to face such things, but can’t they be that much more bearable when we understand that the Lord is near? Trials and difficulties are not evidence that God has abandoned us, but opportunities for Him to work in our lives and for us to draw near to Him as we seek Him and trust Him. Joseph was able to persevere and to prosper because he was relying on God. May the same be true of us, as well, no matter what struggle we are facing in our lives.
