The Light of the World

Luke 2:8-14
And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

Imagine that scene when the darkest night was brightened by the glory of the angels, when a sad, sin-sick world heard the good news, when joy could come to earth in the form of a baby who would be the Savior of the world. We are in a desperate darkness. It seems sometimes like there is no light at all in this world. But though Jesus doesn’t physically dwell on this earth, He is alive, and He shines His light into our lives even still. His Spirit dwells within all who believe. He is working in the hearts of people everywhere. It is still a joyous thing to proclaim that Jesus has come. And what an amazing thing it is, to think that a holy, heavenly God would come to this cold, dark earth and give His life for us. What love, what peace, what hope, what joy does come from that message and that knowledge.

Weary sinner, take heart. God knows you and He knows your need. God loves you, and He wants to help. Whatever your darkness is at this very moment, bring it forth to Him. The God whom angels adore will hear your plea and will respond with what He knows is best for you. The answer to our greatest need is Jesus Himself, for our greatest need is salvation. And if He was so willing, and able, to give us that, how much more will He minister to the need of your heart after you know Him and trust in Him? Though it may seem like only darkness surrounds, look up and know that the Light of this world has come.
