The Journey Forward

Deuteronomy 11:10-12
For the land, whither thou goest in to possess it, is not as the land of Egypt, from whence ye came out, where thou sowedst thy seed, and wateredst it with thy foot, as a garden of herbs: But the land, whither ye go to possess it, is a land of hills and valleys, and drinketh water of the rain of heaven: A land which the LORD thy God careth for: the eyes of the LORD thy God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year even unto the end of the year.

Our journey with God throughout our lives is a progression. We move from one stage to another, one place to another, and hopefully we get closer and closer to Him as we move along. He often takes us out of old things and brings us to new things. Sometimes He wants different and better things for us. And as we move ahead in obedience to what He asks of us, He blesses abundantly in ways unimaginable.

The Israelites’ old Egypt was a place of toil and struggle. It was a place of oppression and heavy burdens. It was a desert place that required much hard work to grow anything. But God moved them along to a better place. The new land would be lush and fruitful. It was a place prepared by God for them that He took special care and interest in. It would be a place of abundant provision and plenteous water, and God would watch over them there constantly.

In our own lives, we can often look back and see God’s hand of provision working in a similar way. Upon our salvation, He brought us out of a place of sin and darkness, suffering and death, and into a new land of light and freedom and joy and peace. And He continually gives us showers of blessings from His endless supply of grace and love. As we’ve continued to follow Him, we can see times where He’s taken us out of our own personal desert into a new place of refreshing. We can see how He’s faithfully continued to be with us and provide for us throughout every stage of our journey.

There is one final journey we have yet to take. Whether in death or the return of Christ, we will pass from this Earth into the eternal presence of our Father. We will leave behind the old burdensome existence of this present life and take on our glorified lives in heaven with Him. And He will bless us far beyond anything we could ever imagine or hope for as we enjoy the new perfect place He has prepared for us. There need not be any fear or anxiety as we pass from stage to stage on our life’s journey, for our faithful God goes with us all the way to bring us progressively toward better and more blessed things as we follow Him.
