On Our Side

Psalm 124:2-3
If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, when men rose up against us: Then they had swallowed us up quick, when their wrath was kindled against us:

If it had not been the Lord, then we would have been lost from the start. If it had not been the Lord, then we are very hopeless, indeed. If we had turned to any other, relied on any other, if we were waiting for any other, doom and destruction most certainly would have come. If it had not been the Lord, we would still be lost in our sins, for that is the greatest enemy we will ever face. And no effort of man could ever cleanse a sin-stained soul, and no god of man’s invention could ever intervene on our behalf when we feel the pull and tug of any fleshly desire. And there is none other to call upon except the Lord if we ever hope to be delivered.

But when we had faith and we trusted and we waited upon the Lord, then He came and He delivered. If it had not been the Lord, our defeat would have been swift and brutal, but it was the Lord, and so we can hope in Him and rely on Him and know He’ll be there again next time. When we stopped turning to everyone but God and finally turned to Him and fell at His feet, then He rose up and conquered our enemy. When we turned to Him instead of looking for someone else we thought was strong, we saw His true power on display.

In order for the Lord to be on our side, we have to be on His. We have to cut ties with our fleshly masters and quit being so enamored by the things of this world and vow our allegiance to the Lord of hosts. We have to quit sneaking back and forth, trying to have the best of both sides, and choose one once and for all. If we choose to fight against God, we will be destroyed, but if we choose to submit to Him, we will find the safety and protection that we seek. And if we will give all of ourselves to Him, He will not hold back and He will not turn back from us, but He will be our defender and our shield.

Perhaps we’ve once walked for a time not on the Lord’s side and found our enemies too strong for us. Perhaps we’ve experienced defeat at the hands of sin and Satan for a long time. But God’s invitation is always open, and His call for people to come to Him has been ringing out through every age. If we haven’t yet come to Him, now is the time to join the winning side. And if we’ve already joined His side, then let us continue to depend on Him alone, for He is worthy of our trust.
