Backwards

Jeremiah 15:6
Thou hast forsaken me, saith the LORD, thou art gone backward: therefore will I stretch out my hand against thee, and destroy thee; I am weary with repenting.

Will we forsake the one who never forsakes? Will we turn back from the one whose heart is always toward us? Will we go backward from the one who seeks to lead us forward? Will we leave behind the one who left all for us? Will we weary the one who never grows weary with our constant disobedience as we seek our own ways above His? What ungrateful children we can sometimes be. How hurtful it must be to God’s heart of love for us to constantly be failing Him, repeating the same sins over and over again, doing what He’s warned us against, being delivered once only to go right back to that same thing again.

Maybe if we feel like we’re going backwards instead of forward in our walk with God, we need to examine our hearts and figure out where we’re going wrong. With a critical eye, we need to find whatever it is inside of us that is still insisting on getting its own way apart from God. We need to figure out what is leading us away from God and causing us to turn our back on Him. We need to look for whatever it is that we’re hoping in instead of Him, what we’re loving more than Him.

And if we’re going backward, we’re going the wrong way, so we must determine to get back to the right path, or else we risk falling away completely, condemning ourselves to a life of carnality that is displeasing to God. If we are going backwards, we are not following the way God wanted us to go because He warns of going back to the old once we’ve been introduced to the new. And if we aren’t willing to turn around, God isn’t going to force us, but the consequences of our disobedience may make us wish we had turned around when we first realized we were going the wrong way.

What a sad thing it is for a believer to fall away from God. These kinds of situations often result in much heartache. We need to guard our relationship with the Lord very carefully. From time to time, we should examine it very closely and see if we’ve forsaken God in any way. We need to be aware of every path we take and make sure we’re not going backwards instead of forward. And we must be quick to turn back if we do find that we’ve gone astray. Let us strive to never forsake the one who will never forsake us.
