Opening the Tomb

Mark 16:3-4
And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre? And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great.

Sometimes it seems our greatest worry is the thing we don’t need to be concerned about at all. The women had come to the tomb with the intention of anointing a dead body, but there would be no dead body to anoint. They knew a big stone would block them from what they sought, but the stone was rolled away. The way was opened to reveal to them the truth of an empty tomb. The impossible was done to prove to them that the impossible could be done. And the stone too big for them was moved to show them that what they couldn’t do for themselves would be done for them.

Jesus works in our lives in the same ways He did on that resurrection morning. Often what we worry over most is something He will take care of for us easily. Our fear of God’s judgment and wrath is appeased when we accept Jesus as our Savior and understand that we are forgiven and redeemed by His blood. Our worries over our daily needs vanish when we see that God will supply all of our needs. And any anxiety about being cast off or forgotten disappears when we realize that God will never leave us nor forsake us. Not only does Jesus roll away the stones that block our paths, but he opens every hard and stony heart to the truth of His love.

Let’s always remember that God can and will do impossible things, and the more impossible and unlikely things seem, the more we need to trust God to work instead of trying to handle them ourselves. His strength is limitless compared to ours. And just when we get to those most hopeless moments of our lives, God can step in and intervene. Too often it seems we dismiss the idea that God can work because we are basing what He can do on our own understanding of the situation instead of understanding that He can do much more than we could ever imagine.

Just as the stone was rolled away for the women, God will do for us what we cannot do for ourselves. Not only will He save us from our sins, but He will then enable us to serve Him and accomplish things for Him that we could never do on our own. When we come to those moments in our lives where every path is blocked, we can trust that God will open a way. As we come seeking Jesus each day, let’s leave behind the old tombs and seek a living Savior, understanding who He is and what He has done and what He is able to do. And as our faith in Him grows more and more, we’ll find that worry doesn’t have a place in our hearts.
