Called By the King

2 Samuel 9:8
And he bowed himself, and said, What is thy servant, that thou shouldest look upon such a dead dog as I am?

Don’t we sometimes find ourselves in the place of Mephibosheth? We look at ourselves and all we see are our failures, our worthlessness, our sins and mistakes. We see all our imperfections magnified in our own eyes. And we may come before the Lord and say, “Who am I that You would even look at me?” We may feel we don’t deserve mercy or kindness from our Lord. We may feel beyond all hope or beyond all help. We may wonder why Almighty God would care about a lowly person like us.

But no matter what little value we may place on ourselves, we are valuable to God. We mean something to Him, and His grace and His mercy extends to each of us in our most miserable state, and He lifts us up and brings us into His presence. Just like Mephibosheth had done nothing to earn King David’s favor, we have done nothing to earn God’s favor. His grace is given freely to us out of His own benevolence, out of His own nature of love. And we can accept it without hesitation.

Mephibosheth had a lot working against him. Not only was he handicapped, but he was part of Saul’s family, who had been disgraced as the king of Israel. Most of his family had been killed. And in the midst of that, David seeks him out to show him kindness. Aren’t we in the same poor state when Jesus comes looking for us? Isn’t it often when we’ve hit our lowest point that He extends His kindness to us and brings us to a better place? At our weakest and lowest, when we’re most in need, Jesus is there for us. He searches for us. He sends for us. He draws us to Him to be with Him.

Let’s trust in the grace of Jesus. Let’s savor His kindness and His love. Let’s enjoy His presence and the blessings He offers to us. He’s taken care of everything. He’s sought us out. He’s brought us close to Him. And we will dwell with Him eternally. So we can cast aside our feelings of inadequacy. Of course we’re inadequate, because we’re nothing without Jesus. He paid for us with His blood, with His life. And we never have to feel valueless or worthless when we’ve been bought at such a price.
