Clinging to Sin

2 Kings 3:3
Nevertheless he cleaved unto the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which made Israel to sin; he departed not therefrom.

Perhaps like Jehoram we’ve put away the idols of Baal but yet still cleave to other sins. Is there some sin in our lives, even as Christians, that we cling to desperately even though we may know that it is displeasing to God? Are we sticking to an old path we followed before we got saved, refusing to abandon it in order to pursue righteousness more fully? Are we relying on our own judgment of whether something is right or wrong instead of looking to see what God says about it?

When we refuse to let go of sin in our lives, it hinders us in many ways. Our spiritual growth is stunted and we are out of close fellowship with God. It is a distraction that pulls us toward other sinful things and away from the path of purity and holiness that God desires us to pursue. Even more serious, we may pass that sin along to someone else. Our stubbornness to let go of some sin in our life may cause a fellow believer to stumble if they see us doing something and decide it must be okay for them to do it, too, and it ruins our testimony to unbelievers, as well.

Sometimes certain sins become a way of life for us. Maybe we’re trapped in the grips of a bad habit or an addiction. Maybe there is something that is a part of our everyday life that is pulling us away from God. Maybe we’re following in the footsteps of someone else and repeating their sins and mistakes in our own lives. Maybe the Holy Spirit has convicted us of something that we refuse to admit is sinful. Perhaps we’re even consciously pursuing something we know is wrong out of pride and callous disregard for God and His ways.

No matter what kinds of things we may be trapped in, no matter what sins are ingrained in each of us, God has the power to defeat those sins in our lives. Christ’s death on the cross overcame every sin imaginable, and He can restore us to wholeness and help us find the right path to take. He can help us to replace our sinful mind-set with one that honors God instead. He can break the grip of anything that holds us captive if we are willing to surrender it to Him, acknowledge our sin, and depart from it.
