A Savior

Luke 2:11
For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

Unto the common and unto the castoffs was a Savior born. Unto the poor and the struggling and the needy. Unto those whose hearts were most tender to God and those who would eagerly accept this gift. Something precious from God was coming down to Earth, and it wouldn’t be reserved for just the wealthy or the elite or those who usually received the best and the most that this world has to offer. But this gift, this hope was for the shepherd in the field and the king in the palace. It was for the vilest sinner and the most faithful servant of the temple. First it was for the Jew, but it was also for the Gentile.

And not just to those shepherds of old, but unto us today was a Savior born. Certainly we can find ourselves somewhere on that spectrum, because Jesus came to Earth to die for all of us. The cry of those angels echoes down through the centuries and rings out in the night, pleading with people everywhere to understand that He came, the Savior of the world and the one who will gladly be our personal Savior if we only invite Him into our hearts. So let us join in and proclaim Jesus to the world around us. Let us tell anyone and everyone that the Savior is here.

The angels didn’t announce Jesus as King, though He was King from His birth, but they proclaimed Him as Savior. A world weary of overbearing rulers and the oppression of kings didn’t need another dictator, but first they needed someone who could come and set them free, who could break the chains of sin and shine a light into the darkness. What they needed more than rescue from an empire was forgiveness and redemption. And then when we experience the vast and overwhelming love of our Savior, we gladly kneel to Him as our King, as our Lord, as our Master forever.

The truth is that Jesus did come, our precious Savior. And what hope we find in that simple word. Whatever darkness we dwell in, He can come and save us. Whatever ensnares us, He can come and set us free. Whatever sin has left us scarred and broken He can take away. We are all sinners, we are all needy, and He came for each of us. Unto us was He born, so let’s not turn Him away, but willingly accept Him as our own.
