2 Chronicles 20:12-13
O our God, wilt thou not judge them? for we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon thee. And all Judah stood before the LORD, with their little ones, their wives, and their children.
An honest prayer is the best kind of prayer. A recognition of our true condition before Almighty God puts us in the right frame of mind. It puts us in a worshipful mode as we recognize His power and position and ability. It shows Him that we are aware of our need for Him and understand that He can work in ways we cannot imagine.
The people of Judah faced a mighty enemy and almost certain defeat. And instead of rushing into battle haphazardly, they come together before the Lord to seek Him and His guidance. An answer is not apparent. The correct course of action is not known. But Judah fixed their eyes upon God, not their problem, not their own weakness, not their enemies, and not their lack of answers. We all come to places in our lives where we could echo this prayer. It may not be of the magnitude of the battle Judah was facing or it may even be our own life-and-death matter, but we all have moments where our lack of strength is magnified, where we really don’t know where to go or what to do or how to proceed.
We can pray honestly before God in these moments, keeping our eyes upon Him, the source of our strength and deliverance, trusting Him to work and move instead of trying to do it ourselves. We seek Him first, acknowledging Him as our leader and guide, the one we depend on. God always has a perfect plan, and He has the means, the power, and the ability to execute that plan in our lives. He asks us to lean on Him and then delights to follow through on His promises to us.
What a glorious moment it is when we come to the realization for ourselves that we have no might before the enemies we face. What a perfect place to be when we see our own smallness and inability to even think of something to do about whatever problem we are facing. Because when we get to that place and see truly how much we need God and how much we must rely on Him, when we surrender everything before Him and seek His face and His wisdom, then we can achieve victory. When the enemy stands before us and we are tempted to be fearful, tempted to run away, or tempted to charge forth on our own, let’s stop and pray with an honest heart before the Lord. Let’s seek His direction and trust His answers. It just may be that He will do something truly amazing before our very eyes.
