Just Enough

Proverbs 30:7-9
Two things have I required of thee; deny me them not before I die: Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me: Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.

Can we, too, see the wisdom in a middle-of-the-road existence? Can we see the danger of both want and excess? And so will we be content in the station that God places us in, knowing that He will supply all of our needs? Are we watchful of those kinds of attitudes cropping up in ourselves? Do we recognize our own capacity to lose our reliance on God if we had too much wealth and the possibility of us doing something out of desperation that would tarnish our testimony before the Lord? Can we be satisfied with just what we have, knowing God in His wisdom has deemed it is just the amount we can handle?

Pursuing more than God would want us to have is a dangerous road to take. Not being satisfied with what He has provided is a harmful attitude to harbor. And if we start relying too much on the things that we have and the money we make, He may just see fit to take it from us so we’ll start relying on Him again. If we prove to Him that we cannot be trusted with riches, perhaps He will no longer trust us with them.

On the other hand, no one would ever wish for poverty. But sometimes a needy state comes into our lives. But may we never get to the point where a seemingly desperate situation causes us to abandon the moral principles we have learned from God. Let us not fall into sin in trying to take matters into our own hands. And may we never allow having little to cause us to think that God doesn’t care about us or that He won’t supply everything we need when we are looking to Him and trusting in Him.

In all situations of life, let us ask the Lord to give us what He deems best for us. Too often we can get caught up in pursuing the things He’s already promised to supply. So let us be content to follow the road He has laid out for us. Let us remind ourselves of His promises whenever we are tempted to doubt that our needs will be met. And may we always be careful to seek God’s will and God’s best for our lives instead of our own.
