Reason to Rejoice

Psalm 126:3
The LORD hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad.

Oh, weary soul, can you not rejoice in what the Lord has done for you? But you may say, “What great things has the Lord done for me? I am suffering and in great distress. See here all of the things which trouble me?” But, weary soul, if you are saved, then think upon that great thing the Lord has done for you. Like Israel rejoicing that the captivity of Zion was ended, rejoice that sin no longer has a grip on you. Rejoice that you are saved and forgiven and redeemed. Rejoice that your soul is heading for everlasting delight in the presence of your Lord in a place prepared just for you. Rejoice that hell’s flame will never singe your skin and that you will never experience the fullness of God’s wrath.

You say you have problems and struggles, but do you not also have your Lord to go with you? Has not God promised to always be by your side? Trust Him, then, and take His hand and rejoice that you do not bear your burdens alone. Rejoice that you have the hope of God on your side, that the almighty Creator of the universe is near to you. Rejoice that His Spirit will offer you wisdom and comfort in the midst of any trial. And find joy in the fact that His power is upon your life.

Or perhaps you may say, “I have not been saved, so what cause have I to rejoice?” Not much cause, weary sinner, but there is something to rejoice in. Rejoice that God has spared you up until this moment, that there is still time for you to turn your heart to Him and accept His free gift of life and light and hope. Rejoice that He has allowed you to come to this place where you might finally surrender your life to Christ and then delay no longer to wash in the fountain of His blood and go away rejoicing in newness of life.

Oh, weary soul, cease not to think upon the great things the Lord has done for you, for they are many. How His mercy has sustained you, how His grace has upheld you, how His love has pulled you up from sure destruction, out of pitch blackness and up to the high hope of heaven, to the joy of fellowship with Him, to the freedom of redemption. Weary soul, look up and rejoice in your Lord this day. Let the world around you see that you do rejoice and show to them the source of your joy.
