Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
Sometimes we cling to one small strand that we think is a lifeline. But if we could really see what we were holding on to, we might see that it wasn’t really helping us at all. Sometimes we hold so tightly to things—actual things, ideas, sins, whatever—afraid to let go, expecting a stomach-churning free fall all the way to the bottom. But if we finally let go, we may find God’s hand already beneath us. We may find that we don’t have to fall very far at all. Sometimes it just takes faith to let go and trust God to hold us up, not what we were trusting in before.
Because when we are trusting in other things even a little bit, we aren’t trusting God with all of our hearts. And if we’re relying on what we can know and our own wisdom, we are sure to eventually falter. And when we take our eyes off of God, when we lose our focus, or when we are looking to other things instead, we often find ourselves wandering down the wrong paths. But when we turn our complete focus back to Him and when we empty our hearts of all those other things we try to depend on, we will find ourselves moving in the right direction.
Deep down, we know that we have to rely on God completely. We know that His wisdom is far above our own. So why do we still sometimes try to go on without Him? Why do we so often put our trust in ourselves or other people or other things instead of trusting Him with all our hearts? Sometimes it’s pride. Sometimes it’s ignorance. Sometimes it’s disobedience. Sometimes we just get caught up in the weakness of our flesh and try to find something solid when our faith seems so flimsy.
But thankfully, we really can rely on God for all things, even things like growing our faith or learning to trust Him more. He can teach us to depend on Him. Acknowledging Him in all of our ways means that we have to go to Him for every matter that we face in life, big or small, important or seemingly insignificant. He wants us to look to Him, and He expects us to. So let’s accept this open invitation from our God and truly lean on Him, look to Him, and trust Him with all of our hearts.
