Open Eyes

Psalm 119:18
Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.

Let us make this our prayer before the Lord each time we look to His Word. Our approach to God’s Word is important. How we view it matters. And what we expect from it makes a difference in what we will get from it. If our attitude is one of simply getting in a reading for the day, then it becomes nothing more than a task to check off our to-do list. If we think of it as just another book that might help us, we’re missing the richness that it has to offer us. If our mind is preoccupied with other things, we’ll miss everything God was trying to tell us.

But as we go to God’s Word, let us keep our eyes open. Let us look and see all that it contains. There is a solution to every problem we will face. There is encouragement for every sorrow. There is truth to combat every lie Satan might throw at us. There is no end to the life-giving wisdom contained in its pages. Our Bibles are full of people’s mistakes to learn from and examples to follow and patterns to emulate. And if we look and seek and dig and study and beg God to open our eyes, we will find those wondrous things the psalmist speaks of.

Indeed, we will find God Himself on every page, for He is the author of it all, and He has left His mark. Our God is exposed to us, and His Son shines forth, and the love contained there practically sings out to us. What might seem like simple stories made up of simple words about simple people take us on the path to the heart of Almighty God. They take us to a garden and a wilderness and a mountain and a sea and a river and a promised land all the way to a hill and a cross and then on to heaven itself. What more could we want to find than the glorious portrait of a holy God who loves us and wants to save us and take us home to be with Him forever?

Let’s look to God’s Word each day with the right attitude. Let’s expect to find something there that will amaze us, that will help us, that will give us a clearer picture of God, something that will change us and make us better servants, something we can offer to someone else who needs encouragement. Let’s open it and absorb it and keep coming back for more, because though we study it for a lifetime, we can never exhaust its supply. Let’s look deep into the Word of God and find the wondrous things that are there.
