Matthew 10:29-31
Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.
It’s mind-boggling to think that when God created Adam and Eve thousands of years ago, He knew what society would be like today—all the technology and conflict and so-called advancements. He knew when He destroyed the world in the flood that it wouldn’t take long for humans to go right back to those sinful ways. He knew He would be sending Jesus into that sinful world and what would happen to Him. All along God has watched His creation unfold and progress but not as simply a distant observer. He’s been involved in His world since it began. He’s been involved intimately in individual lives since He first walked with Adam, though fellowship was broken by sin and so many rejected Him.
One who intricately created our world wouldn’t take His hands off and give us up to chance or let things play out without His guidance and direction. It is not that man grew more enlightened over time, but that God enabled progress. It is not that Satan is gaining ground in overcoming God, but the effects of sin prevail upon the Earth and will play out until this world is destroyed. His touch is upon our lives still today. Indeed, our God is very near. He is at hand. And He will continue to be involved in our world and our individual lives today. If a seemingly valueless sparrow can’t fall without God knowing about it, how much more does He take an interest in our lives?
God had plans for His creation on that very first day, and He had plans for each person who has ever lived, for those who are alive today, and for those who will be alive in the future. And just as He knew way back then what our world would be like today, He already sees far into our future. The hairs on our heads are numbered. The moments of are lives are accounted for and mapped out just so. There will be no surprises for God; He’s ready each time a sparrow falls, aware of every movement and change happening on Earth at any given moment. And He’s more invested in us than those simple birds, for we are the objects of His affection.
God is still working and moving not just on a global scale, but in our own small lives. It’s easy to say that God knows everything about us without truly grasping the reality of that. But every second, He knows our thoughts, He knows our hearts, our burdens, our needs. And though we make our own choices, He knows those, too, and He is willing to walk with us every step of the way as we allow Him to lead us into the future He has planned for us.
