The Power of Jesus

Matthew 9:8
But when the multitude saw it, they marvelled, and glorified God, which had given such power unto men.

Have we ever really thought about the power Jesus had and how amazing it would be to see Him working? Maybe in some ways we can’t appreciate it fully because of the modern world we live in, but instant healing is still an amazing miracle. Despite the medical advances we have in our society, no doctor can do what Jesus was able to do with such completeness and compassion. His is an undeniable power that overcomes anything.

Jesus had power in His words. Many times, only a word was needed to bring to complete health someone near death or to cast out the demons tormenting the one they possessed. His words had the power to entice Lazarus from the tomb and calm the raging sea. His words of truth were enough to compel seasoned fishermen to abandon their boats and to give hope to the poor and needy everywhere He went.

Jesus had power in His touch. His touch gave sight to the blind and cleansed lepers. His touch multiplied the bread in the wilderness and restored the servant’s ear. He healed many by the simple act of reaching out His hand. His powerful love and His powerful mercy were on display amidst the multitudes. He touched the lives of so many by simply caring about them and ministering to their needs.

But Jesus’ power over disease and sickness pales in comparison to His power over sin, His power to forgive sin, and the position He holds that gives Him the authority to do so, for the greatest power He had was in His blood. Only His blood could bring redemption and reconcile a world of dying sinners to a holy God. Only His blood could pay the steep cost of sin and conquer death and hell forever. His blood spilled out broke every chain and shone a light into the darkest places.

What power, unmistakable and undeniable, and nothing is beyond it. Do we respect it? Do we acknowledge it? Do we humble ourselves at the thought of it? Do we stand in awe of it and glorify God because of it? Perhaps our familiarity with the stories of these miracles has lessened our amazement of them somewhat. Let’s try to look at them anew, with a purposeful consciousness of Almighty God working personally in the lives of men. And when we do that, we can’t help but marvel at His power.
