Seeking Jesus

Matthew 2:9-10
When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.

The most important step of any journey is the first one. We’ll never get anywhere if we don’t even start to go. The wise men had journeyed all the way to Jerusalem, seeking the King of the Jews. And though the chief priests and scribes could tell Herod that Christ would be born in Bethlehem, they would not go on the journey with the wise men. We would be wise to seek Jesus with the same diligence. It is one thing to know where He can be found and quite another to journey to see Him for ourselves.

A seeking heart will always find the way to Jesus. God will provide the star if we will follow it to where Jesus is. It’s not a secret that only a few are privileged to know about. It is news that is widely and loudly proclaimed. Surely others could have followed the star, made the journey for themselves, brought a gift to the King of kings. But only the wise men made the trip, and they were full of joy because of their experience.

Some people may have a short journey to find Jesus. Others may have to endure a struggle or a trial in order to begin to seek Him. Perhaps there are some who haven’t yet started their journey and need to follow the star to Jesus. But any who seek will find. Any who desire to know Him will discover a joy beyond anything else they could experience in life. The road is well-worn by now, for many have traveled the path, so let those of us who have found the joy of Jesus be the stars that lead others to Him.

As Christians, we must continue to seek Jesus. Though He now dwells in our hearts, we must seek His will for our lives. We must look for Him amidst our trials and hardships in life. We must seek His presence in our worship. We must seek to know Him more and more, to know what He expects of us, to know who He would have us be. We must look for Him in our prayers and in our praises. And we should not forsake to seek Him on our best days and in our happiest moments, as well.

Let’s be part of the journey. Let’s go along for the ride. Let’s not send someone else to tell us about Jesus, but let’s seek to experience Him fully for ourselves. There’s nothing like what we’ll find in His presence. What joy and peace will be there. What love we’ll experience. What strength will fill us. What light will surround us. What hope He will give us. So with all our hearts, let’s seek Jesus in every part of our lives.
